Communicating Through Story-telling: Raising Our Voices and Extending Our Vocal Lives
Limited Capacity seats available

Technological advances in the fields of communication and performance have, for the most part, served us well. But recent developments have many people in the arts suddenly wondering: might the very technologies we've been using to enhance our skills eventually replace us? With the exponential development of computer softwares that are replicating human expression (vocally, physically, and emotionally), performers face the very real possibility of being absorbed, altered, and perhaps, in time, altogether erased.

Tuning Our Instruments:
It is imperative for us to continue developing our skills, expanding the capabilities of our instrument, and finding the nuances and shades of expression that are uniquely human. We want to discuss the relevance of real experience vs a virtualized one. Does it matter? "The Matrix" moment for the performance arts is upon us and we must address it before we find ourselves catapulted into a future that favors cost-saving commercial enterprise over real human exchange, connection, and performance.

This 2.5 hour session will be a workshop for participants interested in expanding their relationship to the spoken word and addressing the concerns that new technology brings. During the session we will challenge established patterns (vocal, physical, and emotional) that prevent us from furthering our overall expression; discover ways to move through roadblocks, preventatives, and conflicts that limit the creative process; and open up our understanding of, and agility with, words and language, so that we can identify the vocal energies that create and enhance our communication.

Participants will have the opportunity to have a one hour private follow-up session with Geof during the Festival from Friday morning through Saturday afternoon.

There is the possibility that a small group of artists from this session might perform The Pledge of Allegiance at the Saturday night closing showcase -- AUDIO Tonight!

Participation in this program is included with the purchase of any HEAR Now FULL Festival Pass or Featured Artist Festival Pass, or can be taken alone for a fee of $50.00 for the session. HEAR Now Festival performers are also welcome as their schedules and space allows.

Space is limited for this program so be sure to reserve your space today!

Meet Salmon Warzynski, your typical American twenty-something, back in the States after that standard, middle-class, post-graduation trek through Europe.

Now, with the NYPD, the CIA, the FBI, the mainstream media, and a band of homegrown terrorists all scrambling to catch him, Salmon must run--run for his life...

Brad Lansky And The Result War
The Rogue Planet missed Earth by a few thousand kilometers and quickly receded into the blackness of space.

The Sleepers, the smartest form of biological life ever encountered, showed no interest in Earth and shunned all communication, even with GAIA.

The massive object deflected Earth inward, toward the Sun.
Earth’s new orbit is elliptical - a colossal shock for every creature.

For those who cling to life, the new normal means long dismal winters, punctuated by short summers of searing heat.
Worst of all, the new orbit is chaotic, because it gets too close to Venus.

All of humanity is anxiously looking at GAIA to restore certainty, and with it, hope.

NATF Playhouse: Bad Egg
Bad EggElena is an adventurer who has hired a guide, Sneedly, to take her to Ulna, a village in the middle of nowhere. Sneedly proves to be a terrible guide, often relying on a box of magic eggs that never hatches the animal spirit that he wants. Both of them have things to hide from each other - particularly Elena, who refuses to explain the reason for her visit to the village, which makes Sneedly very curious....

Host Catherine Rinella of Midnight Audio Theatre (from WCBE 90.5 FM out of Columbus, OH) shares this original tale.

NATF Playhouse: Take it or Weave it
Take it or Weave it
War is afoot in the realm and sisters Hildegard and Prunella are merely trying to support their family as rag and bone collectors--amid fierce competition with an unscrupulous rag-and-bone conglomerate. That all changes when a stranger gives them an item that soon even the highest powers are trying to recover. The king’s wizard wants it. A band of smelly ruffians want it. And the sisters need it to change the fortunes of their struggling family...

Join writer and producer Ted Wenskus of Disturbing Frequencies (out of Rochester, NY) as he presents this tale of magic, mischief, and mayhem.

Friday Night Family Fun
The Otherworld Balloon is a live performance that uses the transporting power of sound, voice, and music to explore other worlds— whether of the past, the present, the future, the mythical, or the purely imaginary.  Through books, writers, and the special collections of this magical Library of the Air, we’ll use full strength imagination to fuel the journey.

David Ossman, comedian and character actor (Firesign Theatre, A Bug’s Life, The Tick) will host the first voyage of the balloon, as it takes off with the letter A for Adventure. The Otherworld Balloon will fly us from the skies above Kansas City to the Sky-lands of the Maori with Amelia Earhardt and Bessie Coleman, to a steamer crossing the Atlantic with Langston Hughes, to the farthest corner of the unknown Oz with Princess Ozma and her Wizard.  All aboard!  The Otherworld Balloon lifts off at the Truman Forman Auditorium, for Family Fun Night, June 8, 6:30 p.m. on the dot. The show will be recorded for future broadcast/podcast with live audience participation in making sound effects. Arrive early to get a good seat and practice your part.

The Otherworld Balloon is a production of Otherworld Media, an award-winning producer of programs for children and families since 1981. This performance is made possible in part with support from the 2018 HEAR Now Audio Festivals (www.hearnowfestival.org).

Workshop 101: The Dramatic Podcast
NATF presents Workshop 101 at the HEAR Now Festival. This workshop is a crash course in audio theater. In three and a half days, NATF's instructors will take participants through the basics of writing, directing, producing and performing audio theater works. Participants will create or adapt a script that will be performed, directed and acted by the Workshop 101 participants on the final day of the festival. Not only will participants get the opportunity to interact with their accomplished teachers, but they will also get to meet many professionals throughout the field, who can become valued contacts.  Over the last three decades NATF, and its faculty, have been producing audio theater workshops nationally. Workshop 101 reflects that knowledge in a tight program that will give participants better understanding on how to create their own audio theater projects.

Workshop 101 meets daily from 10:15am - 5:00pm.

Saturday, June 9, 2018 7:15pm - Bragg Auditorium Lobby

More than 400 years after they were first quilled, the plays and poems of William Shakespeare are part of the fabric of our literary and performance culture, ranging from movies to plays to coffee mugs to memes. This is all the more of a phenomenon considering that originally, the only way to witness these stories was in person, being directly addressed by the original company themselves. As part of the Hear Now Festival's continuing celebration and exploration of how the spoken words of William Shakespeare reach us, through means both classic and modern, we are getting back to that Direct Address...and then, to paraphrase a bit, we shalt prepare to Rumble...!
Yea, verily! Prepare thyselves for the dramatic event of the year, as the Company of actors deploy an array of soliloquies for your entertainment...and also for domination. Juliet v Henry V! Richard III v Hamlet!! Lady McB takin' out punks like so many damn'd spots! Come to Kansas City for the 2018 Hear Now Festival for the First Annual ShakesRumble!! More details to follow!
